Plant Growth: Measurement Journal

• As a class or in small groups, students will plant their seeds. Be sure to mark each container with the student’s name. 

• Measuring should take place every day or every other day. This can be done as a part of a center rotation or during free time. 

• It will be helpful to gather students together at the end of the growing period to analyze the data they have collected. 

• Prepare students that not all seeds may grow. It may be prudent to start a few extra plant cups, just in case.

• Make a plan with students for what to do with the sprouts once the data has been collected. Possibilities include planting a garden at the school or taking the plant home. Invite students to determine the next steps for their plants. 

• Students may share what they have learned through writing and/or drawing.

• NOTE: Print as many pages for the journal as your students will need based on the growth time of the chosen plant.

Materials Needed:

• 1 cup, jar, or plant pot per student or small group

• potting soil

• fast-growing seeds such as beans or watercress

• measurement tools: paperclips, unifix cubes, ruler, measuring tape, etc

Students will learn about plants, how to grow them, and their significance to the environment and climate change. Students will be motivated to take care of the environment. This activity has passed the scientific review and teachers are advised to use it in the classroom.
