Synopsis
  • This collection of climate data and interactive graphs and maps details what climate change is, what is causing it, how climate change has already impacted the planet, and what its future impacts will be based on different levels of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • A number of links to additional data and interactives are included to provide a comprehensive picture of recent changes and the measured data that support the projections.
Teaching Tips

Positives

  • The charts in this report can be downloaded as a PDF.
  • The report is thorough and well-organized.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Items in the Context Index are clickable and can help you navigate the information.
  • Students should know what greenhouse gas emissions are and where they come from.

Differentiation

  • This report could supplement a lesson about the carbon cycle and how it relates to climate change.
  • This report could enhance a lesson on the Industrial Revolution, how it changed life on Earth, and how it continues to impact human activity.
  • For ELLs, it may be useful to define some words before these students dive into the reading.
  • This resource could be used to create free-response questions about the economic incentives that lead to widespread fossil fuel production.
Scientist Notes
This is an excellent primer on climate change and climate normals. It explains (with citations) the IPCC projections used in models, shows evidence of recent climate change that is the result of anthropogenic activities, and explains some sources of natural climate variability, like the El Niño/Southern Oscillation. All of the data is cited and sourced from reputable agencies. This resource is highly recommended for teaching.
