Synopsis
- This 5-minute video uses a silly song to teach students about agriculture and the lifecycle of potatoes, from farm to plate.
- The video discusses sustainable food practices, such as eating local and regenerative agriculture.
Teaching Materials
Classroom Implementation:
- Before watching, ask students how they think fruits and vegetables are grown and wind up in our plates.
- Practice the "spuds, spuds, spuds..." rhyme with students so they can sing along.
- Explore what resources are needed in order to grow, transport, cook, and eat potatoes.
Extensions:
- Discuss whether all plants grow underground, defining the term "root vegetables," and ask students for examples of plants that grow in different ways.
- Send families an optional take-home activity with multiple potato-based recipes and suggestions for how students can participate in the kitchen.
Related Resources:
- For a hands-on application of agricultural practices, use this lesson plan to plant a pizza garden of students' favorite toppings.
- Use this food activity book to dive deeper into what soil is made of, special characteristics of plants, how to water plants, and how to propagate plants for food production.
