Ask a Question

Synopsis
  • This digital book is set on the coast of Sri Lanka, where a boy named Adesh learns from his oceanographer neighbor about climate change, sea level rise, biodiversity loss, and unhealthy living conditions for sea life.
  • Students will learn about solutions to climate change and what they can do to make a difference.

Teaching Tips

Positives

  • The book contains helpful pronunciation guides for Sri Lankan names, a world map, and a glossary.
  • Women are depicted in the roles of oceanographer and fisher, countering the stereotype that certain professions are for men.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Though this book may be read as a stand-alone book, it is the sixth in a series of books from ClimateScience.

Differentiation

  • Older students could use this to reactivate knowledge about greenhouse gases and how they cause climate change.
  • Younger students could use this story as inspiration for a drawing of themselves doing one of the activities that Methuli suggests can help fight climate change.
  • Students could draw a cause and effect diagram to show the actions that are affecting the ocean.
  • Students could also read this interactive storybook introduction to climate change.
Scientist Notes
This children's ebook is an excellent primer on climate change and covers some of the most import aspects: what is causing climate change, how it is affecting the oceans, and impacts like habitat loss, flooding, and stronger storms. Importantly, it also places a focus on systemic changes to combat climate change, not just individual action. This resource is recommended for teaching.
