Core Component 1: Integration of Multiple Perspectives and Disciplines
This lesson covers both information about the Earth and phonemic awareness. The reading covers changing seasons and ecosystems, and in the following activity, students will practice the concept of rhyme and generate rhyming words with those given.
Core Component 2: Promoting Inquiry-Based and Project-Based Learning
In the rhyme practice activity, students are given the task of helping the Earth highlight the beauty it provides. When the Earth says a word, students must listen for a word that rhymes with those they are given. Teachers will guide students to use what they already know about rhyme to determine the correct words.
Core Component 3: Emphasis on Diversity, Sustainability, and Connection to Nature
Through the read-aloud, students will see how the Earth serves people and how people should reciprocate this service. Teachers can further this connection with nature by taking students outside and encouraging them to find beauty in their environment.
Before teaching the lesson, teachers will need to get the book My Friend Earth by Patricia MacLachlan from a local library or bookstore.
Students should have experience identifying rhyming words.
Teachers will need to create picture and word cards from the words provided in the lesson.
