Synopsis

This lesson introduces students to different forms of energy through movements, celebratory dancing, and reading.  Students will learn about how energy is used for many different things, the importance of food as energy, and different types of renewable energy.

Key Focus Areas

Core Component 1: Culturally Relevant Storytelling and Place-Based Learning

The suggested book takes students all over the world to explore energy use in many different locations and from different cultural perspectives.  Students also explore their classroom or home to inquire about and discover how various items use energy from electricity, batteries, or gravity.

Core Component 2: Exploring Traditional Ecological Knowledge Through Hands-On Experiences

Students learn about the Three Sisters Dance that Indigenous cultures use to celebrate and honor the growth of corn, beans, and squash plants, then participate in a dance of their own.  

Core Component 3: Cultural Respect and Collaborative Community Engagement

Students can engage with their friends and family in the Energy Detective activity or through the tin can phone line to engage with their community.  The book includes pictures and descriptions of many culturally different locations and peoples as it describes the energy used and foods from around the world.
