Synopsis

In this decodable book, students will learn how to use a "sit spot" or a quiet place in nature to observe and notice animals and plants in their area. This encourages students to notice the natural world around them and engenders a desire to protect it. The book features r-controlled vowels, high-frequency words, words with consonant blends, short vowels, and long vowels using silent e.

Accompanying Teaching Materials
Teaching Tips
  • Read the book in a small group or whole group first. Then, have students reread independently or with partners.

  • Introduce the words before or after reading according to the needs of your students. Students may sort words based on spelling patterns.

  • Before reading students can preview the words and highlight them in the text. After reading, students can practice identifying r-controlled vowels.

  • During or after reading, students can color the illustrations on the pages and draw using the reflection pages.

  • Students can write about their favorite place in nature or where they may want to spend time if given the opportunity. Students can share this writing with others to highlight the importance of maintaining green spaces in their community.

  • Students can compare and contrast the types of plants and animals they may see in their community to those listed in the book, leading to a discussion about the importance of native species and biodiversity in the community.

  • Students may visit a quiet place on the school grounds and record observations. Alternatively, play a video of nature sights and sounds for students to observe.
